Meet Jose

Workforce Challenge

Although Jose had family support, his family did not have money for Jose to attend college. Without further education, Jose assumed he would work at a warehouse instead of pursuing his dream of a career in law enforcement.

Workforce Solution

One day Jose received a flyer from the County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board’s youth program. After speaking with a Workforce Investment Board staff member, Jose called to schedule an orientation. During orientation, he realized the Workforce Investment Board program would help make it possible to attain his dream. Jose enrolled at the Provisional Accelerated Learning Center. There he received guidance, encouragement and support as he pursued the skills necessary for a career in law enforcement. Tutoring sessions also helped strengthen his basic math skills.

Outcomes & Benefits

Today, Jose is in training to be a highway patrol officer. He is volunteering in the Highway Patrol office, and has completed various training maneuvers, including the obstacle course, ride-alongs, and learning to deal with volatile situations.

“Even though I had a dream, I often lost hope because I came from a low-income family with no legacy of higher education. When I was younger, I never believed I could pursue a great career. But look at me now! I am doing it with help from the County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board,” said Jose.
