Workforce Challenge

Jamey was a single mother who lost her job as an administrative assistant to a local sign company. She had always wanted to become a nurse, and the time was right for a career change. She contacted JobLink for assistance very quickly after the layoff.

Workforce Solution

The WIA staff at JobLink's Jones Family Resource Center in Mt. Airy worked with Jamey and set up a plan for her to obtain training in the medical field.

Jamey received assistance with applying for financial aid, and received vouchers for payment of her classes when the aid didn’t get there in time for her start date. She also received assistance with job search, resume development, paying for supplies for school and gas cards to pay for her transportation costs for her school and clinical commute. Jamey decided to obtain her LPN diploma first so that she could work as a nurse, and then to continue her education to obtain a degree in Nursing.

Outcomes & Benefits

"I was very fortunate to have the support of the staff at the NWPWDP and the instructors at Surry Community College," said Jamey. "I am also proud to say that while in my last semester of the LPN program I was offered a position in the Neuro Critical Care unit at Forsyth Medical Center." Jamey graduated from the LPN program in December 2012, and she began her career as a nurse after taking the NC State Board exam in February 2013. She is currently enrolled at SCC working towards her Associate’s Degree.
