Meet Susan

Workforce Challenge

At 52 years old, Susan was trying to re-enter the job market, but she was having difficulty. She had previous medical administration experience, but had been unable to find work. For years, she had dreamed of becoming a nurse, but she was not sure if she'd be able to afford the training or succeed in the classroom after so many years. She came to the Employment Resource Center for assistance.

Workforce Solution

At the Employment Resource Center, Susan was introduced to Barbara Luna-Martinez. Barbara interviewed Susan and assisted with her job search. Barbara also spoke to Susan about training for a new field. This was the help that Susan had been waiting for.

Barbara helped Susan research and apply for tuition assistance through the WIA Program. Within one week Susan was enrolled in the Licensed Vocational Nurse Program at Summit Career College.

Outcomes & Benefits

Susan is currently working to become a licensed vocational nurse and achieving excellent grades. Her goal is to complete the coursework and move on towards a registered nurse degree.

“If not for this opportunity I may have had to work a job that had me living at the poverty level,” shares Susan. “Today, I believe in myself. I am gaining new skills and confidence to re-enter the job market.” Susan continues, “I want to thank the staff at the County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board for fighting for us and believing in this program. I am a living testimony of its success.”
