Dr. David Kuo, Chiropractor

Workforce Challenge

Dr. David Kuo, owner of a chiropractic practice in Pasadena, needed to hire additional staff to grow and expand the practice's services and remain competitive. However, he did not have the budget to bring in additional staff, since any new hires would need training and time to get up to speed. Current demand was high and they did not have the bandwidth to pay someone to learn the job.

Workforce Solution

The Foothill Workforce Investment Board had several programs to assist Dr. Kuo: On the Job Training program funding; Work Opportunity Tax Credit funding; and a partnership with the local Enterprise Zone. Together Dr. Kuo and his WIB representative worked together to determine what would best fit his needs. In addition, the WIB showed Dr. Kuo how to apply for Enterprise Zone benefits to help offset costs of taxes and infrastructure.

Outcomes & Benefits

Two candidates were placed into open jobs at Dr. Kuo's office, using funding from On the Job training contracts. Some of the OJT funds were provided through the MultiSector Workforce Partnership NEG grant, because one of the candidates qualified for re-training based on their layoff from a previous employer. In addition, one of the people placed was a veteran. The practice also qualified for the the WOTC program, saving them additional money in taxes.
