Meet Mary

Workforce Challenge

Mary came to the Workforce Center as a dislocated worker, looking for training assistance to enhance her skills in the healthcare field. Her previous employment was in healthcare; however she did not have the certificate and/or degree to match her skill set or experience within that field. Mary was deemed eligible for the PACES program in September 2010, and later, in April 2011, qualified for the KHPOP program as well.

Workforce Solution

Mary enrolled in the CNA and HHA programs and completed training in April 2011. She gained her state licenses in both areas through PACES. Mary then enrolled in and completed her LPN prerequisite courses and was accepted into the LPN program through WATC. Mary finished this technical certificate in December 2012, and gained her state license in January 2013, using KHPOP funds. While in these programs, Mary received assistance with utility payments, housing payments, as well as fuel assistance due to her unemployment benefits ending before her training was completed. Mary was referred to a job coach in January 2013 and also worked with a business team representative and workforce professional on job search activities.

Outcomes & Benefits

After continuous job search and some family hardships, Mary followed through on job leads and was hired as an LPN in May 2013. She is making over $15 per hour and now has full health benefits too. After gaining some work experience as an LPN, Mary hopes to work towards her RN certification. She is excited to have gained this experience and assistance from the PACES and KHPOP program to enhance her career opportunities.
