Meet Helen

Helen is a single parent with a minor child. She struggled during the economic depression when she was laid off after ten years as a Case Manager for a non-profit community services agency. Her educational background included a Bachelors Degree in Family Consumer Science with special major in Dietetics. After the layoff, Helen relied on unemployment to help pay her mortgage payment and other expenses while conducting her job search.

Workforce Solution

Helen received assistance from the Sacramento Works Career Center and was registered in the National Emergency Grant. She participated in the Professional Edge training regularly and completed the session according to schedule. Due to financial hardship, Helen received supportive Services during her job search preparation activities. Helen was referred to the low-income housing program "Keep Your Home CA". Qualifying for this program helped her with expense reduction. Career Center staff also provided positive engagement, encouragement and transitional guidance as she transitioned through a difficult and challenging economy.

Outcomes & Benefits

Helen was unemployed for quite some time, but with the services she received through Sacramento Works, Helen did not give up hope of being employed again. Her high self-esteem, determination and motivation landed her a job as a Pharmacy Technician with Walmart, and she is now working again.
