Learn 4 Life Concept Charter Schools

Workforce Challenge

The California education system has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. The focus on Charter Schools and the opportunities they provide has increased, and the demand continues to grow. Learn 4 Life Charter Concept Schools had a staffing shortage in the area of single-subject state credentialed teachers, which put them at a disadvantage. They needed teachers with the appropriate Teaching Credentials to meet the needs of students and the expectations of parents.

Workforce Solution

Goodwill Metro North WorkSource Center received a grant in March 2012 from the Department of Labor. This National Emergency Grant (NEG) provided re-training and career advancement assistance to affected individuals laid off from the Los Angeles Unified School District and other entities. Metro North WorkSource Center enrolled various single-subject degreed teachers at California State University Los Angeles in order for them to obtain the appropriate teaching credential that Learn 4 Life required. All of the tuition and fees associated with that credential program were paid through the National Emergency Grant.

Outcomes & Benefits

Goodwill Metro North WorkSource Center, along with the National Emergency Grant (NEG) allowed teachers to earn the certifications needed by the company. Learn 4 Life, in turn, was able to extend employment opportunities to those affected by the layoffs. Since February 2013 Learn 4 Life has been partnered with Goodwill Metro North WorkSource Center and has hired 13 teachers with more currently in the hiring process.
