Meet Erica

Workforce Challenge

Erica came into the Workforce Center seeking additional training to enhance her skills in the healthcare industry. Erica is married with two children, and she wanted to pursue a stable career to help support herself and her family. At the time of enrollment, Erica was working part-time as a children's librarian, making around $8 per hour, and was receiving assistance from the state to assist with financial needs for herself and family.

Workforce Solution

Erica met the eligibility requirements for the KHPOP program and was approved in June 2011. Erica followed through on all KHPOP requirements in order to request funding assistance for the Surgical Technology program. She entered training in August 2011, working on prerequisite courses, in order to get accepted into the program at WATC. Erica was accepted into the program and began the core classes to pursue her Technical Certificate. She completed her Surgical Technology training in July 2012 and earned her National Certification as a Surgical Technologist.

Erica was referred to 'dress for success', a program to help her dress professionally for interviews. She also worked with the business team in order to begin job search activities.

Outcomes & Benefits

Erica accessed job banks, received resume writing assistance and did mock interviews with the business team. After several months of hard work on her job search process, Erica was hired as a Surgical Technologist by major healthcare provider in Wichita. Her starting wage was over $15 per hour, which will provide a better income and a more stable career to support her family.
