Meet Laurie

Workforce Challenge

Laurie White, a single mother with six children, wanted to be able to do more for her family. She made a promise to herself that when her youngest daughter started kindergarten, she would obtain her high school equivalency diploma. With only a 7th grade education, Laurie started Merced Adult School in September 2012, and found she was extremely intimidated and overwhelmed. Laurie relied on bus transportation as she did not have a driver’s license due to medical reasons. But Laurie was tenacious and determined to move forward.

Workforce Solution

When Laurie realized she needed help to pay for the GED tests, the adult school recommended that she contact Worknet. Laurie registered with Worknet in November 2012. She was so motivated to complete her GED that she made the 2½ hour trek via bus each way three times: to attend the Worknet Orientation one day, to complete PESCO another day, and then to return the completed portfolio. Worknet helped Laurie with the GED expenses and with transportation. Laurie completed her GED with one of the highest scores achieved in reading. Now Laurie needed additional training to find a self-sustaining job. She decided on a CNA program and again Worknet helped her with tuition, uniforms, books, nursing shoes for West Med College.

Outcomes & Benefits

With the help of Worknet, it took Laurie only 6 months from the start of her decision to obtain her GED to being certified as a CNA. She was so excited when she shared with her career coach, “I will start my new job April 9th, at Country Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Merced.” What an accomplishment! Laurie said "Worknet is so worthwhile. I could not have done it without the constant support from my career coach and Worknet." Congratulations, Laurie!
