Meet Mireya

Workforce Challenge

Mireya had worked for her local school district for six years, teaching third, fifth, and eighth grade. Due to the recession and reductions in funding, she was "pink slipped", or laid off, along with hundreds of other teachers. Mireya had worked hard to become a teacher, and wanted to remain in the field, but she wasn't sure of her options.

Workforce Solution

"A year after I was laid off, the school district notified us about a program being offered by Pacific Gateway and California State University Long Beach," said Mireya.

The program would allow unemployed teachers to take classes at Cal State Long Beach to obtain a single subject credential in general science. The courses put together by the program allowed Mireya to take and pass single subject tests in life science, physical science, and earth science.

Outcomes & Benefits

"This program has awakened an interest in science I had always had, but never nurtured," said Mireya. With her new qualifications, Mireya was offered a temporary contract teaching the science lab at Newcomb Academy Elementary School in Long Beach. She now teaches science to grades K through Fifth.

Mireya continues to seek a regular teaching position but is enjoying her temporary role: "Although my contract is temporary, I know that the addition of the single subject science credential gives me an edge over the other hundreds of laid of teachers in Los Angeles County."

With her new interest in science, Mireya recently took and passed the geo-science single subject state test, which now qualifies her to teach Earth and Planetary Science as well. "Things are looking up, and I could not have done it without the little push I needed. For me, that little push came from Pacific Gateway and CSULB."
