Meet Kasey

Workforce Challenge

At age 19, Kasey was a single mother raising her three-month-old son in a gang-infested neighborhood. Even with food stamps, she struggled to provide for their basic needs. She entered the County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board’s youth program determined to change her circumstances. One afternoon in 2012, Kasey received a call that her son had choked to death. After the loss of her son, Kasey did not give up.

Workforce Solution

After completing work readiness training, Casey began to pursue culinary training through the WIB. She was placed in a work experience program with a chef at a local senior living retirement community.

While battling the stress and depression related to her son’s death, Kasey kept pushing forward. She quickly moved up during work experience training from waiter to hospitality and is now a full-time cook-in-training and unsubsidized employee of Leisure Pointe Retirement Community. Kasey also plans to enroll in a collegiate pastry chef program.

Outcomes & Benefits

“I really needed this program to better myself and I am doing this for my son,” shares Kasey.” “The County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board program helped me get the training and work experience I needed to get a job. Beyond professional development, they also were there for me during my son’s death and that means a lot.”
