Meet Susan

Workforce Challenge

Susan was a happy, full time mother, while her husband was the breadwinner for the family. However, when the economy began to slow, her husband was laid off. With unemployment as the family’s only source of income, Susan, her husband, and their kids were forced to move in with another family. Susan knew that she had to find a good source of income. Becoming a Registered Nurse had always been a dream of hers, so she decided to see if it was a feasible solution to her family’s problems.

Workforce Solution

Susan looked into training and decided to enter the Certified Nurses Assistant training program at Chaffey College. She qualified for financial aid, but needing a more immediate income, she applied for the Acute Care training that would allow her to work in a hospital setting and afford her a higher wage. She was initially approved for the WIA Funding for Acute Care training. Before she could fully enroll in the WIA program, Chaffey College added an Acute Care session and she was able to secure a spot. Although the WIA did not end up funding her education, she received supportive services funded by the WIB throughout her training.

Outcomes & Benefits

Ultimately, Susan completed the Acute Care training at Chaffey College and received her state certifications. She quickly found a job at San Antonio Community College, earning about $12 an hour plus shift differential pay. As an employee, she qualifies for tuition assistance up to $3,000, which will assist her as she continues her training in order to become an RN.
