Workforce Challenge

Gloria came into the workforce center seeking information regarding unemployment benefits. She had worked at a convenience store for over eight years, and felt she had few marketable skills. Her caseworker asked Gloria to write down a list of duties assigned during her employment as a clerk as well as other duties from previous jobs.

Workforce Solution

Gloria took a series of assessments and received a list of transferable skills. She was surprised to see the long list of employable skills she had! Gloria had always dreamed about obtaining her degree in business management but thought she was too old to learn new things and was intimidated by "starting over". With the help of her case worker, Gloria completed a FAFSA application, scheduled an appointment for a campus tour, scheduled an appointment with a college advisor, and started the enrollment process.

Outcomes & Benefits

Gloria became a full time student and will obtain her degree from Seward County Community College May 2013. Gloria has received the honor graduate status. As a result of her 3.94 cumulative grade point average, she will graduate Summa Cum Laude. Her past skills and new degree will certainly make it easier for her to find employment and create a new career path for herself. Congratulations, Gloria!
