Workforce Challenge

After two years of service, Kris was laid off from her job as an administrative assistant when the facility closed. She contacted her local KansasWorks office and spoke to a WIA case manager about her options and opportunities.

Workforce Solution

In doing career research, Kris remembered being intrigued by the school occupational therapist who worked with students where she had been employed in an earlier job. As a dislocated worker, Kris was approved to attend school at Brown Mackie in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program.

Kris is very grateful for the $6000 she received in tuition assistance from the WIA program. She said that her case manager was very helpful and supportive. Having to report about her progress helped to keep her on track. Since she was in approved training, Kris was able to receive Unemployment Insurance during most of her training period, which was very helpful to her.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kris is now a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, working for a rehabilitation company, making $25.00 an hour. She was offered the job while doing her fieldwork. She also works PRN (Pro Ne Rata, which means on an as-needed basis) for a couple of other companies, which allows her to charge a much higher hourly rate. She loves her new career and the people she is assisting.
