Meet Hermano

Workforce Challenge

Hermano was laid off from his temporary position with a city Fire Department. He wanted to become a full time Firefighter/Paramedic, but in order to do so, needed to obtain a paramedic license which was contingent on his ability to pass a written exam. Despite the fact he had completed a Paramedic course at Mendocino College, Hermano was struggling with written exams required for his desired occupation and came to the Mendocino County One-Stop to seek assistance.

Workforce Solution

At the OneStop, knowledgeable Case Managers from WIA service provider MPIC, Inc. along with dedicated One-Stop staff, provided Hermano with much-needed guidance and support. Hermano worked diligently to improve his skills and test taking techniques, using the valuable resources made available to him through Mendocino College (a local One-Stop System partner), and through the Learning Lab at his local One-Stop Career Center, Mendocino Works.

Outcomes & Benefits

Approximately one year after his first visit to the One-Stop, Hermano passed the National Registry Exam to obtain his Paramedic License. He then passed the required written exam and was hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Hermano also obtained his Engineer Certificate and is licensed to operate emergency vehicles. In Dec. 2012, he was part of a firefighting crew responding to a structure fire that saved the life of a woman and her two dogs.
