Meet Leela

Workforce Challenge

Upon her first visit to the One-Stop in Oct. of 2011, Leela was an extremely shy youth with a history of abuse and neglect. She was living with foster parents and had spent over a year job searching with no success. Leela might have left the center unnoticed had it not been for observant staff reaching out to her and determining her eligibility for the Youth Program. In addition to a troubled history, it was soon discovered she had barriers to employment and was deficient in math.

Workforce Solution

After enrolling in the WIA Youth Program, Leela began utilizing various career assessment and training tools such as Career Exploration, basic skills training and job search techniques and activities, all of which helped to boost her self-confidence and her skills. It soon became apparent that Leela was a motivated and compassionate youth with a strong desire to help others. A comprehensive assessment also indicated Leela was well suited for training as a C.N.A. and potentially, as a registered nurse. Leela attended the American Red Cross (ARC) Nurse Assistant training. She successfully completed all of the requirements needed in order to begin seeking employment as a Certified Nurse Assistant (C.N.A.).

Outcomes & Benefits

With new-found confidence and a sense of accomplishment, Leela took great pride in showing her foster parents her official C.N.A. card. She spent a brief time in Job Development before securing employment with two local employers. Leela is no longer the shy young woman lacking self-confidence and employment options who first walked through the doors of the local One-Stop. She is happily employed with a promising career path to follow and a bright future.
