Workforce Challenge

Erin, a mother of two, had previously worked as a Smart Meter installer but was laid off from her position when her company relocated out of state. She had good work experience in this non-traditional field for women, but after the layoff needed to access welfare benefits in order to take care of her family.

Workforce Solution

Erin expressed interest in moving into the electrical worker field of employment. The Sacramento Works Career Coach referred Erin to a training program with the IBEW Electrical Training Center which would result in apprentice placement and wages after the first week of classroom training. Erin would start the training program as an Apprentice and then be able to move up to become a Journeyman Electrician which was her goal.

Outcomes & Benefits

Erin began her training program with the IBEW and shortly after she was hired by Schetter Electric, Inc. at over $12.00 an hour. Looking forward, once Erin has accrued 5000 hours she will qualify to become a Journeyman Electrician. This typically takes 5 years and will triple her wages.
