Workforce Challenge

Raul Garcia is a young father with the responsibility of being the main provider for his family. Without a high school diploma, Raul was struggling to find permanent employment. In October 2010, he enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), a program funded by the Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County. YEP teaches youth ages 16-21 the skills needed to get a job, get back in school or stay on track to receive a high school diploma.

Workforce Solution

In the first months of the program, Raul completed job readiness training and received encouragement to pursue post-secondary education. He participated in job search workshops and applied for over 20 positions. His Academic and Career Advisor referred him to subsidized employment, and through that program, Raul had the opportunity to work 200 hours at Party City in Oxnard.

Outcomes & Benefits

Raul began subsidized employment at Party City in April 2011 while also enrolled in the High School Diploma program at Frontier High School. Two months later, Raul received his diploma and upon completion of his subsidized hours, was offered an official part-time job at Party City. Raul excels in his role at Party City, where he continues to gain the skills and experience necessary for future promotions.
