Workforce Challenge

Unemployed and living at home, Elizabeth was a discouraged high school dropout who felt lost in the traditional classroom setting. After seeing a flyer in November 2010, she entered the WIB supported Youth Empowerment Program at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

Workforce Solution

Elizabeth participated in the Boys & Girls Club’s Job Ready Accelerated program for both an employment path and to get her GED. She attended workshops to learn to create a resume and
cover letter and to develop skills to help her obtain a job, including instruction on how to find a job and be a good employee. After completing the workshops, she prepped for her GED and enrolled in vocational training. Through a subsidized employment program, she was offered a job at Old Navy but she chose to finish obtaining her GED first.

Outcomes & Benefits

Elizabeth is now a self-assured young woman who has come a long way and believes in herself. Through the program, she obtained her GED in July 2012. As she studied for her GED, she also enrolled in a phlebotomy course at a Clinical Training Institute and successfully obtained her license. Elizabeth continues to be a role model and support for youth like her in the
community as she searches for a phlebotomy position in Oxnard.
