Meet Michael

Workforce Challenge

Michael was unemployed and did not have a computer, internet access, an email account, or resume. This lack of resources severely limited Michael in conducting a successful job search. He went from place to place and had to handwrite each individual job application.

Workforce Solution

Michael registered with Auburn Connections in early August 2012, and began using the Center resources immediately to create a resume, create a Gmail account, conduct internet job searches, and attend Active Job Seekers networking group. Michael’s timing was excellent since Goodwill Industries was opening an Express Donation Center in Auburn and applicants were to email their resume to the District Manager to apply. Now that Michael had a resume and an email account he was able to apply for this position.

Outcomes & Benefits

In another example of excellent timing, Michael decided to drive by the company's address to see where it was located. While he was there, he met the District Manager and talked with him, letting him know that he'd applied for the open position. Michael was hired the very next day, August 29.

Although Michael’s story is not typical, it demonstrates that having the right tools and resources will increase your opportunities for success.
