Workforce Challenge

Jose Calzada graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Arts from CSU Sacramento in 2008. In 2009 he started working for a financial services firm as an Account Research Asst. For almost two years, he provided aid to customers dealing with financial hardships and home loan modifications. When the company closed its doors and shipped its business overseas, Jose found himself not being able to make ends meet on unemployment benefits.

Workforce Solution

Jose was struggling to pay rent with the little unemployment he received, so through the National Emergency Grant (NEG), SETA/SacramentoWorks provided him with rental assistance for four months. This financial support temporarily relieved him of the financial burden he carried, so that he would be able to concentrate on job searching. Jose accessed the Sacramento Works website to apply for numerous positions. SETA/Sacramento Works emailed him job announcements in the loan/mortgage industry and also offered him interviewing preparation assistance in case he needed to brush up on his skills. It wasn't long before his persistence and hard work paid off.

Outcomes & Benefits

In May 2012, Jose landed a job with the Franchise Tax Board as a Tax Technician earning about the same income as he was before he got laid off. He is now able to pay his own rent and make ends meet. In an email, Jose thanked SETA/Sacramento Works for all the help and support he received during the difficult period of unemployment.
