Workforce Challenge

Lina, a native of Colombia, had attended University there prior to coming to the US. Her degree was not recognized here, but she was able to find paraprofessional work in her field as a lab technician. In order to advance in her job, however, she needed a degree from the US. Her potential for promotion was limited until she found a way to obtain at least an Associates degree.

Workforce Solution

Through the Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development Board, she applied for WIA funding and qualified for assistance with tuition books, and transportation. She enrolled in the Biotechnology program through Forsyth Technical Community College. During the 2-year AAS degree program, she maintained a 4.0 GPA.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lina graudated with honors and received a substantial increase in salary. She now has the educational credentials to be accepted into a Master’s Degree program in the United States, should she wish to pursue additional education in her field. In fact, Lina's supervisor has recommended that she apply to a PhD program.
