Meet Joseph

Workforce Challenge

Joseph stated he had multiple "problems" that were keeping him from getting a job. He was concerned about his advanced age; he was out of date with the modern job search; he didn't graduate from high school; and he was concerned about a potential decrease his disability benefit. He was living in poverty and receiving services from local community agencies.

Workforce Solution

Joseph was referred to the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). He was enrolled and given a 20 hour per week community service assignment and paid $7.25 per hour. Joseph discovered he still has so much to contribute to his community. He started to overcome the negative mindset that he was "too old". The SCSEP provided him the opportunity to complete his GED,one-on-one job search coaching and attend special computer class for seniors.

Outcomes & Benefits

Joseph represented himself and the SCSEP program well. His host agency was so pleased with the quality of custodial work Joseph performed that his supervisor referred him hired with an independent custodial services company. He was hired and began working part time (as he required in order to maintain his disability benefit). Joseph was very excited to be a working member of a well respected cleaning team.
