Meet Phyliss

Workforce Challenge

Phyllis,an older worker,had just relocated from another state with her two young sons. She had just escaped a traumatic life situation and was looking for stability and income. She had been a stay at home mother for over a decade and was concerned that she had no current outside-the-home work experience to offer an employer. Her job search to this point had been filled with rejection. She also felt her advanced age was an issue with employers.

Workforce Solution

Phyllis enrolled into the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). She was immediately provided paid ($7.25/hr) job training for 20 hours per week of community service. She was given a variety of office related training assignments to enhance and expand her working knowledge to be more marketable in her job search. SCSEP assisted with some supportive services expenses (to help Phyllis move towards employment and self-sufficiency for her family.

Outcomes & Benefits

Phyllis was able to utilize the SCSEP for it's purpose - to enhance job skills and ultimately move into employment. Phyllis decided to go into work for herself. This move would give her flexiblity to earn income and to perform tasks necessary for her growing family. Phyllis was offered a couple of jobs caring for individuals in their home. She also decided to start an independant consulting business for Melaleuca selling wholistic products.
