Workforce Challenge

Going to the same job for 31 years became a way of life for Johnny Grooms, who started working right out of high school. In May 2009, Grooms went to work only to learn that he and many of his co-workers were being displaced. He was concerned because his daughter was about to graduate from high school and enter college. Having been employed at the same company for so long, he hardly knew where to begin to find a new job.

Workforce Solution

Grooms was sent to the Forsyth JobLink – ESC to get started with the necessary process when one is displaced. "After hearing 'you will be just fine,' about a thousand times from Forsyth JobLink staff, I started to believe it!" said Johnny. Forsyth JobLink provided assistance in the development of a resume and online applications.

Outcomes & Benefits

Grooms learned that he had the experience and qualifications to apply for a job with Johnson Controls in Winston-Salem. He applied and got the job. Grooms says he is very grateful to the Forsyth JobLink. They helped him understand that sometimes things happen beyond your control, but how you react to the situation can make the difference in getting through it.
