Workforce Challenge

Amanda Collins of Boonville had always wanted to work in law enforcement. For years she volunteered as a “MADD Mom” (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). When she lost her job at a food processing plant last year, she decided it was time to act on her dream.

Workforce Solution

She contacted the Yadkin County Law Enforcement staff in late June and told them she had already enrolled in the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course at Surry Community College. The Yadkin County Sheriff’s Department offered its wholehearted endorsement of Amanda’s plan, and sponsored her to go through the program. Amanda enrolled in WIA in early July, and received assistance with uniforms and other costs.

Outcomes & Benefits

Amanda graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at Surry Community College in December 2009. She is now working full time as a Deputy Sheriff at the Yadkin County Courthouse.
