Meet Norma

Workforce Challenge

Norma had recently moved to a small town in Kansas where she had great difficulty finding viable employment, even part time which was her preference. She felt strongly that her advanced age was perceived as a liability to potential employers. Her transportation ability was very limited - the small town did not provide public transportation and she did not feel comfortable driving an unreliable vehicle to the nearest largest city.

Workforce Solution

Norma joined the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and was able to perform 20 hours per week of paid community service as a food service worker at the local senior center complex where she lived. This senior center was just steps from her front door and provided her interaction with other seniors.

Outcomes & Benefits

As a result of the fantastic work she provided, Norma was hired as a Site Supervisor. She was given a convenient schedule of about 20 hours per week (her preference) and began earning enough to supplement her retirement income. She is now a happy and respected worker positively representing the elder generation in a setting where her age and experience are valued.
