Meet Gerado

Workforce Challenge

Gerardo was referred to the Summer ARRA Program when he was 22 years of age by his Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Gerado had made poor choices as a young adult that had a huge impact on his education and employment goals. He was a high school drop-out, with gang affiliation, on formal probation. In addition he was participating in drug and alcohol classes and monthly court appearances to review his progress.

Workforce Solution

Through the summer American Recovery & Reinvestment Act(ARRA)program, Gerado was given an opportunity to train in a "green" career program. He worked on the weatherization crew at the Glenn County Human Resources Agency and was named "Superior Youth Performer". Due to his eligibility for a variety of fund sources he was able to continue in a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) work experience with weatherization and was a primary crew member for the building of green homes. The WIA Program assisted with bus passes until he received his license, GED testing,and costs for his Basic Weatherization Certification. Gerado got married and had his first child. He then participated in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)program so he could his employment as a weatherization crew member.

Outcomes & Benefits

While employed, Gerado obtained his GED and is now the proud parent of two children. His supervisor describes him as dependable, teachable, industrious, and willing to be a member of a team. Junior was at a point to make changes in his life and with training and assistance, he was able to reach his goals.
