Meet Irvin

Workforce Challenge

Irvin had been laid-off from employment and had numerous financial obligations that made re-training appear impossible. He also had a history of alcohol and drug abuse and had been sober for over 10 years. He was interested in receiving his AA as a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor.

Workforce Solution

The Workforce Investment Act(WIA) program was able to bridge the financial gap by providing transportation support and assistance with the cost of books and other fees associated with his educational goal. During some rough times, Irwin states "the WIA program helped me find hope and gave me encouragement to take the time to finish my education and complete my certificate."

Outcomes & Benefits

Irvin completed the coursework and received his degree in Drug and Alcohol studies. He became full-time employed as a Substance Abuse Counselor at Cache Creek Lodge earning a self-sufficient wage. He loves his job and the ability to counsel other Native Americans. He has his own vehicle and other financial obligations are stable. Irvin is currently in the process of purchasing a home.
