San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board

Meet Chris

Workforce Challenge

Youth in San Bernardino County often struggle to gain work experience, and therefore are challenged to be work ready upon high school graduation. In addition, they also face difficulties in being able to get to and from work. Chris was one such youth.

Workforce Solution

Chris Brown completed the 2012 Summer Youth Job program, which is a partnership between the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board and the Department of Behavioral Health. The grant paid the wages to 279 County youth like Chris, and provided transportation assistance as well as work readiness training prior to starting jobs and paid internships.

"I enrolled in the construction and landscape program through the PAL Center and learned how to install dry wall, hardwood flooring and tile," Chris said. "This program has supported me in my goal of enrolling in the architecture program at the Cal Poly Pomona."

Marlène Davis, job developer at the PAL Center added, "Chris did so well that he was made a yellow hat and supervised his fellow students during the program."

The PAL Center's Construction students receive hands-on training on a module building that has been completely remodeled. "I loved this program because I like working with my hands and in the end, I could see my efforts," Chris said.

Outcomes & Benefits

Chris will now enroll in the 2012-2013 year-round Workforce Investment Act youth program at the PAL Center to continue building his skills and work experience.

"Youth like Chris understand what is expected of them and they grab the opportunity and run with it," Marlène said. "They truly appreciate the support and resources provided by the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board."
