Poma Distribution

Workforce Challenge

Poma Distribution delivers diesel and gasoline to stations throughout the Inland Empire. This local business was founded in San Bernardino County and has focused growth in the region. It's a high volume, volatile business that is affected by rising gas prices.

As the economy turned around, owner Greg Batten saw the opportunity for them to gain new clients in the region. But to do so he needed to expand their sales department. The costs to recruit, hire and train a new sales person was prohibitive until he met with members of the Business Resource Team of the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board.

Workforce Solution

"For a salesperson to learn our inventory, pricing and our software systems equaled 350 loads of gas to make up the costs," Greg said. "The On-the-Job Training program was a great opportunity for our business."

The Business Resource Team assisted Greg with the paperwork for the OJT program and with identifying qualified candidates for him to interview.

Outcomes & Benefits

"Our new employee did a great job in training and within a few months has already brought on an important client," Greg said, adding, "Poma is a dedicated local employer and the On-the-Job Training program allowed us to hire a San Bernardino County resident who is helping us retain our local customers and grow within the region," he said.
