Workforce Challenge

After studying Electrical Technology at WyoTech in 2010 and receiving his Electrical Trainee Card, Paul Sutton soon after found work in the electrical industry. He worked as a Solar Electrician for a few months, and as an Electrical Apprentice for nearly a year after that. But when he was laid-off in January 2012, as with many other Americans in the same situation, Paul went back to looking for work. He worked on small projects here and there, but none could sustain a full-time, long-term position.

Workforce Solution

Paul found luck when he applied for a Solar Electrician position with Phil Haupt Electric, a company with over 28 years of experience in the electrical industry, which specializes in electric vehicle (EV) charger installation services. At the time, Phil Haupt Electric was working with the North State Building Industry Foundation’s On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program, funded by the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency. The program can reimburse employers up to $5,000 in paid wages for hiring unemployed workers, to assist in offsetting the expense of training. Paul was interviewed and selected as the most qualified, was confirmed to be eligible for the OJT program, and began work a week later.

Outcomes & Benefits

“With our small business beginning to grow, hiring another employee was going to be necessary,” said Becky Haupt of Phil Haupt Electric. “The OJT program gave us an opportunity to not only (receive) help in the hiring process, but in the training process as well.” The OJT program helped Phil Haupt Electric find a great candidate to fill their needs, while Paul was able to find employment and gain valuable on-the-job experience while doing so.
