Workforce Challenge

Sometimes, our youth program participants prove to be "diamonds in the rough." A young man and his family have lived in a Community Development-subsidized housing unit for over five years. The father of this family has been in and out of prison for many years, leaving this young man to help parent his younger siblings. The area where they lived was at risk for gang activity, and residents were eligible for services under the state's Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP) initiative.

Workforce Solution

The City Heights Community Development Corporation referred the young man to San Diego CONNECTS, a new program through CalGRIP and its partner organizations, including the San Diego Workforce Partnership, targeting youth for occupational training, basic literacy, paid internships and other services. The challenges this youth faced made him a perfect candidate for the program.

From the beginning, this participant was friendly, congenial, and always eager to learn new skills. He was one of the first students to complete the full San Diego CONNECTS Program and find employment in a security position at the United Education Institute. His managers have been impressed by his dependability and attitude. Even though this young man is happy with his current position, San Diego CONNECTS is still assisting him with mapping out his career.

Outcomes & Benefits

This young man will start attending City College in the fall to further his education with the goal of obtaining a better position and continue helping his family.
