Kansas Department of Commerce VETS Program

Meet Steve M.

Workforce Challenge

In 2003 Steve retired from a highly successful career in the Navy. His transition to civilian life and finding a suitable job in Kansas was very difficult. He could not find a job that allowed him to use his advanced technical skills and leadership abilities, so he started his own business. "After retiring [from the Navy], I ran my own home construction business until the 2008 economic slump made that business unsustainable. I then became a commercial driver at a garbage disposal company for the next four years." However, Steve needed a new career path.

Workforce Solution

"I began attending night school for Wind Energy Technologies and took classes for almost two years while driving truck. I had reached a point where I the necessary classes were not available on-line or at night." He turned to the VETS Program for assistance. "The one semester of help VWIP offered gave me the courage to quit my job and attend a full semester (22 credits) of college and complete my degree, including an internship," said Steve. During the two years of school Steve applied and submitted his resume for numerous jobs, but received no offers of employment. However, once his degree neared completion, he updated his resume and began to receive legitimate job offers.

Outcomes & Benefits

Steve accepted an offer from a major Wind Energy company at a very satisfactory wage, plus benefits and promotion opportunities. "Had it not been for VWIP offering financial assistance during this final semester," said Steve, "I would not have had the courage or financial ability to become a short-term, full-time student." We wish Steve success in his new career!
