Workforce Challenge

Charm was laid off in February 2010 from the insurance industry, where she provided administrative and technical support to various clients regarding Workers Compensation. After her layoff, Charm began meeting with a Career Development Consultant at DavidsonWorks, and decided to pursue the Healthcare Management program at GTCC. Charm expressed an interest in working at Davidson County Department of Social Services.

Workforce Solution

Even with responsibilities as a wife and mother of four children, Charm successfully completed the Healthcare Management program with flying colors and received an AAS degree in May 2012 with honors. As part of her curriculum, Charm received her Microsoft Office Specialist Certificate and Medical Billing and Coding Certificate credentials while still enrolled in her program.

At the time of graduation, Charm was anxious and eager to begin full time employment because of all the financial hardships she and her family had to endure over the past couple of years. Though Charm had been successful in school, she lacked hands on experience and her job search was proving stressful, so her case manager suggested a work experience. Charm was connected with a work experience opportunity at the Davidson County Department of Social Services.

Outcomes & Benefits

Charm quickly proved herself in her Work Experience role, and was hired as a full-time Income Maintenance Caseworker I. Charm will be eligible to move into an Income Maintenance Caseworker II position in six months. A little over two years after being laid off, Charm has reinvented herself and has a new career.
