Meet Beatrice

Workforce Challenge

Beatrice is a wife and the mother of a sixteen year old son. After her husband underwent radiation he was left with disabling rheumatoid arthritis. Beatrice’s sister came to visit, and unexpectedly passed away. The family's financial profile was bleak and Beatrice often had to “shop” for groceries at the local food bank. Being a giver and not a taker, Beatrice set her sights on education to overcome the challenges she and her family faced. Beatrice was determined to become a Registered Nurse.

Workforce Solution

Beatrice explored her educational options with Edison State College and Southwest Florida Works. Working in partnership, Beatrice was accepted into the Department of Nursing, received a Pell grant and qualified for Workforce Investment Act funding - all of which opened the door to her lifetime goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. Still, wanting to give back or perhaps, "Pay it Forward", Beatrice found time to volunteer within her community. Beatrice remained focused, studied hard and graduated with honors!

Outcomes & Benefits

Beatrice sat for her RN Boards and successfully passed. Without much delay, Beatrice was hired by Lee Memorial Hospital at Healthpark as an RN. Today, between caring for her family, working full time and continuing to "Pay it Forward", Beatrice is pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree from Edison State College. Southwest Florida Works was pleased to recognize Beatrice and her family during its annual recognition and awards ceremony.
