Meet Evelyn

Workforce Challenge

Evelyn Carmona struggled to find full-time work that could support her and her two young boys. She went from one job to the next until she was laid off from a warehouse job. But then she heard about the Workforce Investment Act Youth program funded by the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board.

Workforce Solution

Evelyn applied for the WIA Youth program to earn her customer service certification at Career Institute. She began in the summer of 2010 with a job at a local company.

"You need customer service for any type of career," she said. "They taught me how to think like a professional."

Evelyn was then offered the opportunity to interview for a full-time job as an assistant to the San Bernardino County WIA Youth Program. The resume and job interview skills training she'd received through the Career Institute prepared her for this opportunity. She has been working full-time since November 2011.

"I enjoy working on a team with a common goal," Evelyn said.

Outcomes & Benefits

"Before the WIA Youth Program I see how I was confused and overwhelmed. But now I see my future more clearly and I'm focused on returning to school to earn my bachelors degree in criminology," Evelyn said.

Last month, at the 2012 CWA Annual Youth Conference, Evelyn was shocked when she received the Dwight Brydie Scholarship.

"My family is so happy for me," she said. Evelyn plans to use the scholarship towards her general education requirements.
