Meet Eric

Workforce Challenge

Life was taking a downward turn when Eric dropped out of high school and left a difficult family life. He felt lost and thought no one cared to help him. His best friend, who was enrolled in the WIA Youth Program at the PAL Center in San Bernardino, CA., told him there was a place where he could find the support and resources necessary to put his life back together.

Workforce Solution

Cummings met with a Career Specialist and enrolled in the WIA Youth program funded by the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board.

"I went through the work readiness class and I learned so much on how to prepare myself for the working world," Cummings said. "They placed me in real-life work sites, put me back in school and made sure that I’d stay on the right track towards building a career when the program ended."

Cummings then started a GED class and realized how much he enjoyed learning.

"Our teacher really cares about each of us and shows us we all have the potential to do the best we can and become what we dream about," Cummings said.

Outcomes & Benefits

Cummings now has a job and is working to complete his GED. He lives in a supportive environment and no longer looks back on his tough past. With the life skills and support he received through the WIA Youth Program, he has a bright future ahead.

"I've learned I can do anything I set my mind to and it's never too late to get an education," Cummings stated proudly. "When I do make something of myself, I plan to return to the PAL Center and help the kids who are down on themselves and inspire them to keep trying."
