Workforce Challenge

Naccoya McKnight moved to Greenville, SC nearly 3 years ago from Philadelphia, PA, looking for a better place to raise her children. She worked two jobs, attended college and her children were doing great. In November 2010, she was laid off from both her jobs. She became stressed and depressed, and with bills piling up, her children were in need of everything. She looked for work everywhere and was willing to do almost anything to provide for her children. She babysat to earn money for necessities.

Workforce Solution

Through Greenville County Workforce Development, Naccoya was offered the opportunity to attend the PET program (Preferred Employee Training). Attending this program opened her eyes to a lot of deficiencies in her resume, but the skills she was learning, along with some individual guidance from her Intensive Case Manager and Facilitators helped her focus on what she was missing. With an improved resume, along with the soft skills, customer service, WorkKeys® certificate, and interviewing skills she acquired through the program, her confidence grew. Naccoya was grateful to her Case Manager and the PET Program for providing the support she so desperately needed.

Outcomes & Benefits

During the PET program, Naccoya stayed positive, and shared and networked with others in the group. Two days prior to the end of the program, Naccoya interviewed for a temporary position as a recruiter. She was hired on Friday, and was very happy even though the position did not have employee benefits. After four months of working as a temp, Naccoya was hired on full time as a Recruiter, making a good salary. She also has health benefits and paid sick and vacation time each year. But most of all, she is doing what she loves to do: helping others succeed.
