Workforce Challenge

Daniel Forbis was a loyal employee for a paper mill in Charlotte. After three and a half years of being an instrumentation technician the company shut the plant down and Daniel found himself unemployed. Instead of letting it dampen his spirits he remembered his ex-wife mentioning the WIA program and went to the Union County JobLink Career Center in Monroe to inquire about career in the biomedical field.

Workforce Solution

Daniel enrolled in a two year biomedical techician program at South Piedmont Community College. Glenda, his Workforce Specialist, supported Daniel and made the process "easy and seamless, stress free." Daniel appreciated the funding received through the WIA program that helped him return to school - something he now realizes he should have done years ago. While in school, Daniel planned to seek employment at a manufacturing company after graduation.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completing the Biomedical Technology Degree at South Piedmont Community College, David found employment in August, 2011, with Southeastern Packaging Co in Concord, North Carolina. He is now a Maintenance Electrician earning a good wage and working 40+ hours per week. With full employee benefits such as health, dental, vision, 401K, and safety bonus, he is very excited about this new opportunity.
