Workforce Challenge

Amy loved her job as a kitchen designer for a large home improvement retailer. For nearly 3 years, she was able to help people build the kitchens of their dreams. However, after a medical leave of absence, Amy was laid off. With no post- secondary education, her options were limited in going back to work.

Workforce Solution

Amy visited the JobLink Career Center in Statesville, NC, where she was paired with Wendi Bowen and Janice Fleming as her Workforce Specialists. Wendi and Janice persuaded Amy to enroll in school. Amy is now pursuing an Associate of Business Administration degree at Catawba Valley Community College.

Outcomes & Benefits

Amy will graduate in the summer of 2012 and has already found a job at Holland Transfer, a trucking company in Statesville, NC, as a billing clerk. She has faced many hardships while in the WIA Program including the loss of her husband’s job, a biking accident, and keeping up with her children’s busy schedule. Despite it all, she loves the program. The JobLink team has been her biggest cheerleaders. Without their support and the funding she received through WIA, she would have never been able to afford school and find a job.
