Workforce Challenge

James had a high school diploma, but his work history consisted mostly of dead end jobs with limited chance for advancement. James relied solely on himself for all his living necessities. It was definitely a financial struggle, making money stretch, paying necessary bills and having food to eat.

Workforce Solution

In July, 2009, James turned to the WIA Adult program for assistance. He accessed adult educational funds and began his training in Mechanical Engineering at Greenville Technical College.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completion of his training in May 2011, James was immediately hired by Avenger Aircraft & Service of Greenville as a Structural Design Engineer making a much higher wage than before.

Since his employment, he has relocated (with a daily Per Diem) to Auburn-Lewiston, Maine for a 2 year project: The “Comeback of a Legend” Aircraft restoration project. August Wilhelm Henningsen, Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik, opened the hangar specially built for the Lockheed Super Star project in Auburn-Lewiston, Maine. They are the “senior experts” of the Lockheed Super Star project, who between them have almost 500 years’ experience of aircraft maintenance.
James feels much accomplishment while he’s working with the “Big Dogs” on this ambitious project.

James truly appreciated the support and good direction from his Case Manager. With his opportunity to learn new skills (aircraft) and expand his knowledge he will succeed beyond just this project. He also learned that with some hard work you can learn just as much as someone with a higher degree. Congratulations James!
