Workforce Challenge

Package Containers, Inc., in Canby, was in trouble. Productivity was low and there were deep divisions between management and the unionized workers who had limited opportunities for advancement and training. “If something wasn’t done, the company would not have survived," stated John Stupfel, Director of Operations. The company needed help. It partnered with seven other companies and turned to the Workforce Investment Council of Clackamas County (WICCO) for help.

Workforce Solution

WICCO provided approximately $50,000 in matching Employer Workforce Training Funds to help form the Canby Leadership Training Consortium. “Through the training our lead people learned to drive performance and accountability by helping employees understand what is expected of them and by gaining their commitment to achieve it. Our employees are now motivated to perform well because of the hands-on involvement of the lead people showing employees how their efforts make a difference in the company's success," stated Stupfel.

Outcomes & Benefits

As the result of training, the company improved its bottom line by more than 10% even in the midst of the recent recession. It expanded and added employees. It also added custom product lines, creating jobs for journeyman printers and graphic artists. In 2010, Package Containers, Inc. was recognized as the Portland Business Journal's 2010 Manufacturing Small Company of the Year. "This training did more than just support company competitiveness," stated Kim Parker at WICCO. "It changed lives."
