Workforce Challenge

Fire Mountain Gems and Beads, located in Grants Pass, OR, has over 500 employees and is one of the largest employers in the county. The company is a direct marketing e-commerce company, providing jewelry-making supplies around the world. Building an e-commerce business in a small city has its share of challenges, including the lack of a trained workforce. Training is often not available in the local community, requiring staff to travel out of the region, resulting in reduced productivity and increased costs.

Workforce Solution

As a company that is committed to building its talent and promoting from within, Fire Mountain relies on Local Workforce Investment Board sponsored training, known as the Power Up Academy, to improve the skills of its local workforce and its competitiveness. Through the Power Up Academy, Fire Mountain has been able to partner with other local e-commerce companies to identify common training needs. The Power Up Academy sources expert trainers to come to the region to provide training on-site. This eliminates the need for employees to travel. It also allows companies in the region to keep growing locally.

Outcomes & Benefits

“The Employer Workforce Training Fund has been valuable to us because our employees have actually been able to take local classes. They can take that information right from the class and bring it back to the office and plug it right into what they are doing today.” Lyndell Smothers, Human Resources Manager, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads.
