Workforce Challenge

AM Equipment, in Jefferson, OR, manufactures industrial windshield wiper systems and small motors for commercial, industrial, recreational and marine uses. Six years ago the company began to implement lean manufacturing to improve its competitiveness. Despite the recent economic downturn, the company is expanding into Latin American and Europe.

Workforce Solution

With growing demand for its products, AM Equipment realized that its manufacturing division was spread too thin. It wanted to hire additional employees but was challenged to meet the training needs of entry level workers. The company turned to Job Growers Incorporated, the Local Workforce Investment Board. Job Growers offered a package of solutions, including Employer Workforce Training Funded training. With these solutions, AM Equipment expanded its staffing, developed an on-the-job training program for its manufacturing unit, and participated in lean manufacturing events and trainings.

Outcomes & Benefits

Gary Pickett, President of AM Manufacturing, explained that the flexibility of the program and the responsiveness of the Local Workforce Investment Board helps companies create the solutions they need to grow and expand local economies. “Any type of help that can be provided to a small business is going to pay dividends. We have three people that we have employed that have impacted the economy. Without the training funds there is no question we’d have the same level of employment as before."

Pickett also shared that AM Equipment is looking forward to getting more international accounts and hiring and expanding in the near future.
