Meet Roger

Workforce Challenge

Roger was laid off and struggled to find work, often competing for entry level jobs with more experienced workers. Even though he had the desire, he couldn't afford college and he didn't know about financial aid. When his brother told him about the WIA Youth Program at the PAL Center in San Bernardino, CA, Roger applied and was accepted.

"When I walked into the PAL Center, I felt like I had finally accomplished something," Roger said.

Workforce Solution

Roger was very apprehensive about interacting in his work readiness classes, but the staff coached him to be more comfortable with his classmates and make new friends.

"They helped us overcome our fears about interviews and write a good résumé," he said. "I couldn't do any of those things before I came to the PAL Center. They're so kind to us and treat us like we're a family."

With the help of his career specialist, Roger reviewed all of his options and enrolled in the construction program. He was quickly put to work learning to install drywall, how to remove mold, fix a roof and most importantly, how to work within and lead a team.

Even though he is still attending the PAL Center, Roger recently started his own T-shirt business.

Outcomes & Benefits

Roger is the first to admit that he's not the same person he was when he first applied to the PAL Center. He's also found a practical application for his artistic talent and enjoys drawing blueprints. Roger now dreams of becoming an architect and owning his own construction company.

"The WIA Youth program at the PAL Center has changed my life and made me realize I have potential. I am forever thankful to this amazing school," Roger said.
