Workforce Challenge

Twenty-one year old Shayd needed help finding employment and getting a fresh start after a recent move to Madison. He was looking for opportunities to build up job experience, gain employer references for job applications, and get back to school to further his education and work towards his career goals.

Workforce Solution

Shayd first came to the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Out-of-School Youth program to get help in expanding his job search strategies and connect with employers. Through weekly meetings, he worked with WIA specialists to determine his desired career path and get financial help to return to school to further his education in pursuit of those career goals.

Coming to the weekly Youth Fest meetings helped him not only connect with community resources to help him in his job search and education, but also gain references from staff that he could use on his job applications to prove his dependability and work ethic.

“[WIA] to me is about the experience of working in a teamwork environment,” Shayd said.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shayd has now found employment in a position that will serve as a valuable stepping stone into his chosen career pathway in hospitality and service at Marriott International, where he has received formal recognition for his outstanding customer service skills.

Through help from the WIA program, Shayd is now attending Madison College and working towards an Associate’s Degree in Business Management and an additional certification in Hotel and Hospitality Management.
