Workforce Challenge

Jerry was unemployed and had been unable to find a new job, even with his B.A. in Business Management and his extensive manufacturing experience. As an over-40 worker, he was part of a growing number of older workers who were struggling to find employment in a down economy. During his unemployment his wife worked full time and occasional part time jobs to compensate for the wage loss.

Workforce Solution

Jerry decided to bring his skills up to date and return to school. He enrolled in WIA in August 2009, and began his training at Greenville Technical College in January, 2010. After receiving his Associates in Mechatronics Industrial Maintenance in May of 2011, he began sending out many letters and resumes. Jerry seemed to average one interview for every 9-10 resumes sent out. He had several second interviews and was dedicated to his job search.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jerry was contacted by ZF Transmission for his first interview and then was required to test for the open position. He stated that the test was difficult but that the training he received made it possible for him to complete the test and perform well.

He then had his second interview and was made an offer at a good salary with full benefits, which he accepted. Jerry will start at the new ZF Transmission facility in October, 2011, where he will apply his variety of skills and experience as a “Manufacturing Technician”, establishing and overseeing the details of the production process.

Jerry felt that his prior education was outdated when compared to the “younger generation”. However, he feels that his new employer values his training and experience as a seasoned worker.

The training he received through the WIA played a big part in landing this job opportunity. The WIA services and care from his case manager made being unemployed a little easier to withstand.
Congratulations, Jerry, for your accomplishments and perseverance!
