Meet Lennie

Workforce Challenge

Lennie Alvarez of Hesperia, CA had been working as a construction manager for eight years when he was laid off from his job. He then worked all over Alabama and the southern states for a year.

“It was hard to be away from home and my family,” he said. “I fulfilled my contracts and then came home.”

When he learned about the services offered at the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board’s Employment Resource Center in Hesperia, he thought it was too good to be true.

Workforce Solution

Lennie came to the Employment Resource Center and underwent a complete skills assessment.

“It was the biggest blessing in the world,” Lenny said.

He investigated two potential training programs and then through the Desert Green Veterans Grant enrolled in the heavy equipment operating program at the Deep Creek Construction School in Apple Valley, CA.

He’s not only receiving skills training, but he is also receiving assistance for gas money.

Outcomes & Benefits

Now in his sixth week of training, Lennie is on his way to earn his certification. He is learning the 167 skills he needs to complete the program and is working on a video resume which potential employers can view when he applies for jobs.

Within three months, he will have completed the equivalent of a three-year union apprenticeship.

“I feel good about myself,” he said. “The students who come out of this program have good jobs and I’ve been doing really well.”
