Workforce Challenge

Christine had been working as a Membership Assistant for a professional development organization but was laid-off due to company downsizing. Unsure of how to get a fresh start in the workforce after the layoff, she needed an opportunity to revamp her skills and connect with job searching resources in her local community.

Workforce Solution

Christine enrolled in the Workforce Investment Act program as a dislocated worker and attended Business Technology Academy training courses to improve her job skills. Through these short-term training courses, she received formal training in programs such as Microsoft Office. Although she had used these programs in her previous job, she was self-taught and did not know some of the more advanced features. She was glad for the opportunity to maintain active learning and improve her resume while still searching for employment.

“My academy experience upgraded my computer skills while giving me something positive to do while job hunting,” Christine said.

Outcomes & Benefits

Christine is now employed in an administrative support position in the Human Services Department of Kenosha County. The formal skills training that she received through the Academy helped give her resume and edge over the competition and helped her get employed.

Her job duties in her new position include organizing and coordinating meetings, scheduling and planning agendas, and coordinating special events.
